Mitzvah #1

Belief in the Existence of G‑d

(Exodus 20:2)

Category:

 Positive

Definition:

The commandment to understand and believe in the existence of a G‑d from whom all existence exists and from whom all happenings happen. This G‑d is, was and will always exist.

Reason:

This Mitzvah is the foundation of the whole Torah, for if one does not believe in the existence of G‑d, they certainly would not believe in any of the Mitzvot.

Who/When/Where?

Must be kept by men and women

At all times and under any circumstance

At every moment of the day and night and at every turn in life.

Someone who does not keep it excludes himself from the Jewish nation.

How do I keep it?

Establish this belief in your consciousness through contemplation.

This consciousness affects the way you think and feel.

Not to deny this truth, even at the cost of your life.

A step beyond…

To understand the existence of G‑d to the best of one’s ability through learning more about it.

We cannot fully comprehend exactly how and why G‑d exists, however we can pursue the knowledge of it each according to their ability. Belief then applies to what cannot be grasped by your mind . This can be accomplished by studying the works of Chasidut where this concept is discussed at length.

Details:

To believe…

1. …that G‑d’s existence originates from within Himself and not from something else that preceded Him.

2. …that He is the ultimate truth.

3. …that G‑d is not physical.

4. …that He is not bound by time.

5. …that He is complete in every way and does not lack the ability for anything.

There are many more details that are explained in the Code of Jewish law, the works of Chassidut and by Jewish thinkers throughout the ages.

Chassidic Perspective:

The existence of G‑d is beyond the grasp of intellect. However, this very concept is universally understood by even the simplest of people. This so because G‑d is everywhere therefore the concept of His existence is everywhere- even in this world where there is no revelation of G‑dliness.

This is what is meant by the word “atoh – You” in our prayers and blessings. We mean You as You exist without any adjectives describing You.

You – Your very existence.
