G-d commands Moshe to count the Jewish nation in the 2nd year on the 1st of the 2nd month, He is to count all of them from the ages of 20-60 according to their names.(Ch. 1 verses 1 & 2)

Moshe and Aaron count those from the age of 20 for military service. The name of each of the princes of each tribe are listed.(Ch. 1 verses 3 - 19)

Moshe has been told by G-d to count the tribes of Israel individually by name those that were fit for military service from the age of 20 - 60. These verses deal with the first 8 tribes.(Ch. 1 verses 20 - 35)
