Chumash Classes: Bamidbar

Bamidbar, the first portion in the 4th Book of the Torah, introduction.

G-d commands Moshe to count the Jewish nation in the 2nd year on the 1st of the 2nd month, He is to count all of them from the ages of 20-60 according to their names.(Ch. 1 verses 1 & 2)

Moshe and Aaron count those from the age of 20 for military service. The name of each of the princes of each tribe are listed.(Ch. 1 verses 3 - 19)

Moshe has been told by G-d to count the tribes of Israel individually by name those that were fit for military service from the age of 20 - 60. These verses deal with the first 8 tribes.(Ch. 1 verses 20 - 35)

Continuation of the count of the tribes. The tribe of Levi was not part of this count because they were to serve G-d in the Mishkan.(Ch. 1 verses 36 - 54)

A description and numbering of the tribes as to how they were divided into groups of threes, on each side of the compass with the Levites and the Tabernacle in the middle. The order in which they camped was the same order that they traveled. The chapter ends with a total number of all the men that were eligible for military service.(Ch. 2 verses 1 - 34)

The genealogy of Aaron. The status of the Levites.(Ch. 3 verses 1 - 15)

The census of the Levites, the families of Gershon, Kehos, and Merari. commanded by God to Moshe, from the age of one month old.(Ch. 3 verses 16 - 39)

The census of the first born. Substitution of the Levites for the first born, 22,000 with a person and 273 were redeemed with money, The next chapter begins with the duties of the family of Kehoth in connection with the carrying of the vessels of the tabernacle.(Ch. 3 verses 40 - 51 and Ch. 4 verses 1 - 10)
